The Journey of the Cups

When I first learned the Tarot, it was the story of the card or the suit that really caught my imagination.

A good example is the suit of Cups. Cups represent Emotion and the sequence of the suit describes the journey of our emotions and of the growth of our heart.

Starting with the Ace of cups.     When we feel the first awakening of love, a release of emotion, a new beginning, it can be falling in love, or any kind of emotional release from vulnerability to joy.

At the two level, there are now two cups. A choice? We connect to this emotion, and fall in love ‘Oh it’s YOU!’

Three of cups.  Now we are connected, three cups includes more than 2, the feeling is more expansive, let’s get engaged, let’s celebrate, this is wonderful, friendship, fun, love.

the central card, the three of cups is about connection, celebration & engagement

Four of cups.  Typically after the first throes of romance, there’s a moment when things are not so exciting, hmmm….things aren’t as great as I thought, I can see faults in the other, I don’t like this.   I’m not sure I like what’s on offer….And very often with the four of cups in tarot we say….there may be a tendency when you don’t commit to this love (the hard work also) you miss an opportunity.

And now with Five on cups.  Sadness.  Regret as we look at the mistakes we’ve made. We face the three cups that are spilled, at disappointment, and forget to turn around and focus on the the two cups that are still standing.

Six of Cups.  In order to move forward from the 5 we refer to happier days of the past and remember friendships and shared values that we loved, in order to remind us what we want to be in relationship with that inspires us to move onwards.

Seven of Cups.  Now the world is your oyster, anything is possible, there are so many choices.  The card depicts seven cups floating up above you with all sorts of jewels and symbols. Here we need to decide that we really want in order to bring it down into reality

Eight of cups.  Now you are ready to move on further but to change direction in order to follow your passion.  We have come to a crossroads and are being asked to consider the experience of the eight cups that are standing up behind you, and what direction you now want to go in.

9 of cups. Satisfaction, contentment, you have learned how to make yourself happy and enjoy the pleasures of life. Which is great but ultimately we all desire to make ourselves and others happy.  All all humans desire deep connection with others.

10 of cups. When we achieve emotional fulfilment for ourselves and others. Happy Families.
