The Knight of Cups in a relationship tarot reading heralds love
I picked the Knight of cups today, my birthday, and pondered his message to me, on not a particularly auspicious birthday number, but a birthday is a birthday. Friends call and send birthday cards and celebrate you on your ‘special’ day and so I was interested to see what the tarot had to say.
The Knight of Cups moves forward in search of the holy grail, ever idealistic, he carries a cup before him as if taking his heart in his hands and offering it to the world. He is an idealist and a romantic and his quest is one of the heart. He is in search for his soulmate, his soul path.
This Knight is chivalrous and has a quality of kindness and gallantry towards those he loves. He physically steps forward with acts of kindness to those he loves. With cup in hand he moves forward riding his horse on a tight rein, keeping steady control which indicates his cautious approach to life and he is in armour for protection. This is a Knight whose use of self control can belie his deep inner life, which he may not share easily with others. Connections that are meaningful and genuine are what this knight seeks. Which is why he moves forward offering his heart to the world in an act of devotion to the pursuit of love and harmony.
The knight of Cups is not the knight of pentacles who makes slow steady accountable progress, or the knight of wands, who loves excitement and adventure and follows his passion with verve and vigour, or the knight of swords, who goes for the opportunity, even though it feels risky, because what if he doesn’t, what if he misses out because he doesn’t make the most of this opportunity?
This card makes me ask…What is the holy grail for me? the search to find my soul’s purpose? A loving relationship? A soul mate? Deeper friendships that are meaningful and genuine ….that he can let into his heart. And perhaps more appreciation of the beauty and creativity in life, more poetry, more kindness.
Another thought about receiving the Knight of Cups as a birthday message is, is there an offer of love on the table? An invitation that isn’t exactly concrete, but rather an idealistic and gentle invitation to love. Like the knight in shining armour his proposal may seem so romantic and sweep you off your feet however it may also be too idealistic as he puts his love on a pedestal, from which she/we is/are bound to fall. Someone once described the feeling of this knight as a starving artist who lives in his garret buoyed up with the idea that he one day he will find his masterpiece and so in a tarot reading, I often caution this character to bring a reality check to ground this offer.
Is it time to drop the Aries drive, for a gentler pace? for the pace of this knight, whose feathers from his helmet flutter in a light breeze slow and dreamy as he moves forward on his quest for true love. Keeping his heart open and travelling hopefully.
