The Nine of Cups knows how to enjoy life

The man depicted on the nine of cups sits arms folded in front of him, a big smile of satisfaction on his face, and a red hat on his head. He looks decidedly pleased with life.

Nine cups form an arch behind him. In a tarot reading, at the 9 level, nearly at the 10, and in the cup suit which represent emotions, we are reminded that knowing how to make yourself happy enables us to make others happy - 10 of cups talks of happy families. The nine of cups as an advice card suggests this is a moment to smell the roses, lighten up and be satisfied and content with what you have achieved so far.

His red cap and red socks suggests he has a flamboyant side and is bit of a bon viveur.  So take a leaf out of his book and enjoy the good things of life, indulge yourself in a moment of self congratulation on where you have got to, the nine nearly the ten, be content and have some fun.

I always have a difficult relationship with this card as I have the tendency to over indulge. Spoiling yourself now and then is a good thing, however watch out not to overdo whatever your particular indulgence may be.  Booze, food, laziness, screen time, superficiality….I wont tell you what mine is…

Often this card comes in a reading when you have been taking life too seriously, and it’s time to lighten up. Intensity can scare people away. We need to find a balance, we don’t want to be too serious about life nor too superficial.

Our goal is to find true happiness within, so do some soul searching and decide who you really are and what gives you joy, and if you haven't yet found someone to share your future with, it might be time to think about what you really want in a relationship.

There is no question bringing a lightness of touch to life can lift you out of the bog of taking life too seriously.  Have a good laugh at yourself and the ridiculousness of it all. I found myself suggesting to a client, who’s going through a hellava time and who got the nine of cups as an advice card, go get drunk, cry, weep, laugh, get messy, throw yourself off any pedestal of your own making that is keeping you all righteous and lighten up. I don’t think she did that but I did receive a text a couple of days later saying she’d had an amazing moment of enlightenment.

Knowing how to make yourself happy is at the heart of this card, without being selfish or overindulgent.  Live in the moment and be with positive people. I would add, bring fun to the party, the meeting, the work place. If you’ve got a serious meeting crack a joke to lighten the atmosphere.  You are almost at the ten of cups which heralds emotional fulfilment so try a lighter tact to get there.
