The Queen of Cups

I never quite connect to the Queen of Cups even though she is kind, trusting and loving. I feel a kind of passivity about her, a remoteness. Perhaps because there can be a tendency if you are in Queen of Cups mode to overdo caring for others, so that you rather lose yourself, YOU disappear.   Where’s the oomph to get hold of, the inspiration, the intellect, the action, I ask myself? Which says a lot more about me than any short comings the Queen of Cups may have!

Today I pulled her for my daily card, and felt thoroughly underwhelmed by her appearance and possible message for me…

‘Sue, what might be useful today is for you to practice being gentle, loving, kind, trusting.’

Dull dull dull.  However as I pondered her, I could also see it was pretty sound advice on a day when feeling very lack lustre after a bout of covid,  I had tried to force myself out but got to the bus stop and felt so faint I had to go home. Was she saying… ‘Stay home, don’t be looking for excitement (Queen of Wands), it may even not be practical to try get a things ticked off your to do list (Queen of Pentacles) and certainly don’t start giving yourself a hard time (Queen of Swords) for feeling tired and unmotivated.  Today you may just need to take care of yourself.’

The Queen of Cups is the quintessential mother in Tarot. She teaches us to give and receive unconditional love, to ourselves as well.  We are enough just being, we don’t always have to be doing, the world will take care of itself for a day.  And tomorrow who knows what we’ll be ready for?

Pondering a picture I might put up for this blog, it occurred to me who the Queen of Cups reminded me of?  Mother Mary.  On so many of my christmas cards, there she is head bent holding her baby, oblivious to the three kings, oblivious to her surroundings, stable, straw, cattle, sheep, star, just giving unconditional love to her baby.  It never occurred to me to think of the Queen of Cups as the Mother of our Christmas story. Her patience, strength, humility, unselfishness. It has added a whole new perspective to the Queen of Cups and respect.
