Tarot spreads that guide us in the ‘right’ direction
Setting your north star
I haven’t written a blog on a specific tarot spread for a while and I thought choosing one would be a good way to demonstrate how tarot ‘works’ in a reading.
There are all sorts of spreads depending on your line of enquiry. Two cards, three cards, four, five all designed to give specific insight on different areas of life; relationships, work, personal growth etc.
‘Setting your north star’ is useful when you want to set your sights in the ‘right’ direction. I decided on it, on the last few days of my holiday in preparation for going home. I rather regretted it initially. It gives you five cards that reflect where you are currently, your root or what supports you, what you need to let go of, your best course of action, and where its leading.
I picked the Five of Pentacles for present situation. It’s a card that reflects feeling a bit left out in the cold; an area in your life where you may feel a bit impoverished.
Having picked the five of pentacles on new year’s day, it identified a theme for the year which is a desire for more community, more friends, more like-minded folk in my life. In the five of pentacles I recognised feeling isolated, albeit happily. I am singularly independent and spend a lot of time alone. And here I am on holiday by myself to prove it. Happy….its nice to have company…
The root, or support card. The Moon. Well I know we had a full moon a couple of days ago, which is often an emotional time. How many times do we stand under a full moon and wish our dreams will come true. Equally it can be a time when emotions are confusing, you can’t quite work out what is real and what isn’t, our inner demons come out to play, unconscious fears get in the way of being able to see the path clearly. The unconscious is so powerful and often revealed in our dreams. In readings I often say, don’t be afraid, recognising and accepting your shadowy side, facing your fears on the dark side of the moon, you come out into the SUN.
As my support card, I’d like to think it is saying, you’ve done done enough ‘navel gazing’ as my Father would say. And in context of the five of pentacles, know your inner demons around not being lovable, afraid of rejection, of not being ‘enough’…. not that uncommon as almost all of us have aspects of this…stop projecting this out into your future!
And the thing with the five of pentacles is, it says, you are in this situation out of the decisions you have made. The advice is, see the colourful windows, there are people inside, you just have to go in and ask for help if you need to.
The Moon also says trust your intuition to see beyond illusion, beyond fears that you project out into your present and your future, based on past experiences. Bring your shadow side into the light.
What I have to let go of. Temperance. My favourite card to live by. Be patient. Trust in divine guidance to show up in the right time. It’s hard not to read that card as quite the opposite….throw caution to the wind!
Best course of Action …The Star – bright hopes and fresh prospects. Having pulled the rug from out of rocky foundations, the Tower has fallen, now fresh new bright prospects are ahead. As a best course of action card. I better come up with some bright new prospects and activate them.
Where its leading – 10 of Words. Letting go of control …..for a new dawn. Letting go of Ego. Agony. With the promise of transformation. Again pride is an aspect that keeps me isolated. I don’t pick up the phone. I definitely don’t want to ask for help.
I couldn’t resist pulling another card to say and then what? Nine of cups. The Nine of cups makes himself happy. Just take a look at him, he looks very satisfied with life. Happy. Satisfied (unlike the five of pentacles who isn’t) Pleasure loving, with a tinge of indulgence and being less serious about life.
Lighten up you could say. Be Happy. Be satisfied and content with the pleasures of life.
January 31st. Lets see how things unfold over the next six months.
Do come and have a tarot reading with me in Battersea or on line. It is really interesting and helpful. And fun.
